How it works
The Wage Calculator uses a straightforward formula to convert between hourly wages and annual salaries. The core principle is based on the total number of hours worked in a year.
Hourly to Annual:
- Annual Salary = Hourly Wage × Hours per Week × Weeks Worked per Year
Where:
- Hourly Wage is the amount earned per hour.
- Hours per Week is the average number of hours worked each week.
- Weeks Worked per Year is the number of weeks worked in a year.
For example, if an individual earns $25 per hour, works 40 hours per week, and works 52 weeks per year, the annual salary is calculated as follows:
Annual Salary = $25 × 40 × 52 = $52,000
Annual to Hourly:
- Hourly Wage = Annual Salary / (Hours per Week × Weeks Worked per Year)
Where:
- Annual Salary is the total salary earned in a year.
- Hours per Week is the average number of hours worked each week.
- Weeks Worked per Year is the number of weeks worked in a year.
For example, if an individual earns $60,000 per year, works 40 hours per week, and works 52 weeks per year, the hourly wage is calculated as follows:
Hourly Wage = $60,000 / (40 × 52) = $28.85 (rounded to the nearest cent)
FAQ
What's the standard work year calculation?
Standard is 40 hours/week × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours/year. Adjust if you work part-time or have unpaid time off.
Does this include taxes?
No, this shows gross income only. Your take-home pay will be lower after federal/state taxes, Social Security, Medicare, and any deductions (insurance, 401k).
What about overtime?
This calculator doesn't include overtime. Overtime is typically paid at 1.5× regular rate. Calculate overtime earnings separately and add to your base.
How do I compare job offers?
Convert both to the same basis (annual or hourly) using this calculator. Also factor in benefits, PTO, and work-life balance which don't show in raw numbers.
What if my hours vary?
Use your average hours over several weeks. For freelancers/contractors, use your typical weekly hours and adjust weeks per year for time between projects.
