FAQ

What if people ordered different amounts?

If some people ordered significantly more expensive items, consider itemized splitting instead of equal division. Calculate each person's items separately, then add their proportional share of shared items, tax, and tip. Some payment apps like Splitwise handle this automatically.

Should tip be calculated before or after tax?

Traditionally, tip is calculated on the pre-tax subtotal. However, many people tip on the total (including tax) for simplicity. The difference is usually small. Enter tax separately in our calculator if you want tip calculated on the pre-tax amount.

How do I handle rounding differences?

When the bill doesn't divide evenly, someone needs to pay the extra cents. Options: (1) One person covers the difference, (2) Everyone rounds up to the next dollar, or (3) The person who organized the outing covers the gap. Our calculator shows both exact and rounded amounts.

What about people who didn't drink alcohol?

If some people didn't drink and the alcohol bill was significant, it's fair to split the alcohol separately among drinkers. Calculate the food total divided by everyone, then add the alcohol cost divided only among drinkers.

Is it okay to split a bill on multiple cards?

Most restaurants allow bill splitting across multiple cards. Let your server know at the beginning or when ordering. Some places have limits on how many ways they'll split, so check first for large groups.

Methodology

The calculation is straightforward:

Basic Formula:

  1. Tip Amount = Bill × (Tip Percentage / 100)
  2. Total = Bill + Tip + Tax
  3. Per Person = Total / Number of People

Rounding:

  • Exact amounts are calculated to the cent
  • Rounded amounts go to the next whole dollar for easier payments
  • The "rounding extra" shows how much more is collected when everyone rounds up

Tips for Fair Splitting

  • Equal split works best when everyone ordered similarly
  • Itemized splitting is fairer when orders vary significantly
  • Tip before tax is traditional; tip on total is simpler
  • Round up to cover any rounding differences
